Good Morning Tourism Partners,

The CVB family is saddened by the loss of our dear friend and longtime partner, Preston Midgett. Preston was an unassuming, generous man who freely gave of his time and talent in many ways. His passion for the city he loved was clear in everything he did. Our deepest condolences to his family and many, many friends. We'll miss you, Preston.

Thank you to the Convention Center staff for assisting the Virginia Department of Health in transitioning a portion of the building into a COVID-19 vaccination clinic. While we have hosted many large-scale events in the past 10 years, this undertaking was unprecedented for us, and I’m proud of the ongoing work we're doing to support our community.

During Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, in coordination with Delegate Nancy Guy, the Council agreed that she will withdraw the legislation to establish the Virginia Beach Tourism Authority. The withdrawal is in recognition that key aspects of the bill needed further revision and more broad-based support to be successful. As we move forward, the CVB will remain focused on continuing the very important work of building on our 2021 economic recovery through continuous improvement and the critically important work of building a healthy tourism economy.

Last week the Sports Center was buzzing with activity during the 2021 VA Showcase Championship, the largest track meet in the country. History was made as a new world U20 (under age 20) record was set by a group of four high school-aged girls, posting a remarkable performance of 8:37.20 in the 4x800 relay. This amazing contingent surpassed a nearly 30-year record last set in 1991. What a way to kick off the new year in our new venue!

Finally, I’m excited to share that our new Tourism Industry Partner blog is officially up and running with a variety of posts, including an exciting video of the world record set last weekend. Check it out often as new content such as national industry news, trends, presentations, research, and CVB updates will be posted regularly. We are also working on a redesign of our Tourism Industry Partner website; look for that announcement and roll out in the coming weeks.

As always, I welcome all feedback. My team and I are available if we can be of assistance.

Thank you so much for your support,

Nancy Helman
CVB Interim Director
