Dear Valued Tourism Industry Partners,

The bulk of the season is just about behind us but in Virginia Beach, we’re not even close to being ready to wrap up  Summer 2022! With the peak of ECSC activities continuing through this Sunday (8/28), and the ongoing work of the artist of the 5th Annual ViBe Mural Fest and the fabulous vibes of Funk Fest 2022 (Aug. 26-27), plus all the awesome things happening every day, what guests ever wants their Virginia Beach vacation to end?

60th Annual Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championship By Vans - It’s been an action-packed week as ECSC ‘22 crews have been gearing up for the big competition weekend. Produced by the Virginia Beach Jaycees for 60 years, this event is a hometown favorite which draws hundreds of surfers vying for prizes and thousands of spectators ready to take in all the live action! Last night’s concert, with headliner Ava Max, was an awesome start to the newest ECSC element, the Audacy Oceanfront Concert Series. Tickets are still available for the shows happening tonight and over the weekend. View the full weekend schedule here. Here is the concert lineup and a ticket purchase code:

Virginia Beach Funk Fest Beach Party Returns Aug. 26 & 27 -  For 13 years the Virginia Beach Funk Fest Beach Party has brought the “funk” to the Oceanfront for two days of electrifying music, great food, and unique vendors. This popular music genre draws influence from R&B, jazz, gospel, and blues. Funk artists like James Brown and George Clinton (the leader of Parliament-Funkadelic) inspired many musicians and helped spawn other genres like disco and hip hop. General admission to the Virginia Beach Funk Fest Beach Party is FREE, but capacity is limited. For our guests desiring a closer, more comfortable viewing experience, we offer a ticketed Preferred Viewing section. The Preferred Viewing ticket is a two-day pass providing a closer viewing area (patrons bring their own beach chairs), dedicated portable restrooms, and a cash bar. Preferred Viewing admission is guaranteed, while general admission is limited and strict!

For the week of July 24-30, according to STR, Virginia Beach was within the top 25 performing DMO’s. Virginia Beach’s hotel occupancy rate for this week was down -4.9% year-over-year to 78.2%,  from 82.2% and a -2.9% decline for the running 28 days. ADR was also down -0.9% to $161.01, where we saw an increase of 1% for the running 28 days.  RevPAR was down -5.7% to $125.94, where we only saw a -1.9% decrease within the running 28-day trend. In comparison to 2019, we are only slightly down on occupancy with a decline of -2.8% but counter this with an ADR and RevPAR increase of 22.6% and 19.1% respectively. For the week of July 24-30 a majority of destinations in Virginia Beach’s competitive set saw a decline in occupancy, where destinations such as Coastal Carolina, NC saw a -6.8% decline in occupancy as well as Ocean City, MD seeing a -5.1% decrease in occupancy. Factors to consider include the state of the current economy and weather patterns along the East Coast of the United States during this time period.
