Happy New Year and Welcome 2021!
Resilience is the word that comes to my mind when thinking of how, together, we continue to navigate one of the most challenging periods in our industry’s history. Sustaining during a pandemic isn’t in any of our playbooks, yet together we are all committed to staying the course. We must now use the new year to focus on the recovery phase. Leading this recovery is the CVB’s primary goal.
As many of you are aware, our City Council voted this week in favor of a resolution adding a Legislative Request to the City’s 2021 Legislative Agenda to establish the Virginia Beach Tourism Authority. I would like to personally thank the CVB Community Task Force members, city staff, and CVB Executive Consultant Bill Hanbury for their dedication, tenacity, and hard work on this unprecedented project. For the first time since the department's creation more than 40 years ago, the governance of the CVB will be examined.
During the upcoming weeks, Bill will be working with City staff members and the private sector to ensure that the State Legislature has accurate information to make an informed decision on the potential establishment of the Authority. If approved by the State Legislature, the Virginia Beach City Council will have the ultimate decision-making power, at the appropriate time, regarding the implementation of the VB Tourism Authority. In the meantime, Bill will also be working with me as we further identify CVB improvements that we can implement regardless of the CVB’s future structure and governance. No matter the outcome of the process, the goal is to make CVB the best organization that it can be.
I look forward to working with all of you as we move down the field. I am committed to keeping you posted along the way.
Please call or email if I can be of assistance.
Sincerely,
Nancy Helman
CVB Interim Director
