January 15, 2021

Greetings Valued Industry Partners,

My CVB colleagues and I hit the ground running, literally, during the first two weeks of 2021. I’m thrilled to announce that earlier this week we welcomed the participants of the largest indoor track meet championship in the nation!

The 2021 VA Showcase Track Championship, which runs through Sunday, is known as the best meet in the U.S. and is emblematic of what the sport of track and field is all about. In a city of firsts when it comes to meeting the needs of athletes at all levels of skill and abilities, it is fitting that Virginia Beach was selected to host this championship which is open to all athletes in both invitational and regular events.

Nolan Jez, the founder of the event, made the decision to move the meet from the Liberty University Indoor Track Complex to our new venue. “We’re really excited for it,” he said. “We’re excited for our new home at the Virginia Beach Sports Center. And we’re hopefully going to bring some national records and world records to the 757.”

I am unbelievably proud of this win for our city and am immeasurably grateful for all the support from you, our valued tourism partners, and our city leaders.  You believed in us and we delivered, and we’re only just beginning. All events taking place are adhering to strict Covid-19 mitigation protocols as the health and safety of our athletes, fans, and visitors in our Sports Center is our number 1 priority.

As many of you already are aware, City Council passed an ordinance in December to establish the Resort Management Office (RMO). While the RMO is no longer a working unit under the CVB we are still working very closely with them on initiatives to improve our resort. The RMO will facilitate new and enhance existing initiatives in the Resort Area including:

  • Increasing entertainment programming;
  • Establishing a Resort Ambassador program that will provide cleaning, hospitality and safety services;
  • Close coordination with City departments in taking corrective maintenance actions to address those areas with immediate needs;
  • Assisting in the enforcement of city codes;
  • Close coordination with police to maintain a safe and friendly atmosphere for all visitors and residents.

Heading up this phenomenal effort will be Interim Resort Administrator Brian Solis and a dedicated staff. Their work has already started, and I look forward to keeping you posted as we continue to score goal after goal together to keep Virginia Beach the legacy destination it is.

Please feel free to reach out to me or any CVB member if we can be of any assistance to you.

Thank you so much for your support,

Nancy Helman
CVB Interim Director
