What an eventful week it has been for Virginia Beach tourism! As we head into March, we wanted to share a handful of timely industry updates and announcements.
National Travel & Tourism Week Returns
I’m thrilled to announce that National Travel & Tourism Week (NTTW) will be returning for 2022! Please mark your calendars for Thursday, May 5, at the Virginia Beach Convention Center for #NTTW22.
The countdown for this year's celebration awards luncheon is on. Our team has met with many of you to develop a plan for the celebration. This year's event has a few new elements which will allow us to say “Thank You” to those who help us keep the wheels of tourism turning. You can watch the official USTA theme video here and get ready to nominate your “hospitality heroes” for special recognition at the luncheon.
We have narrowed the focus of the awards this year to our frontline staff. The new award list is as follows:
- Carlos Wilson Lifetime Achievement Award (25+ yrs. of service)
- James B. Ricketts Hospitality Hero Award*
- Banquet/Catering/Houseman/ Continental Breakfast Attendant
- Front Desk
- Bellman/Valet/Concierge
- Housekeeping/Laundry
- Maintenance/Engineer
- Hostess/Host/Cashier
- Dishwasher/Busser
- Wait staff/Bartender
- Kitchen staff
*New category open to anyone employed in the hospitality industry, regardless of title

Shamrock Marathon 50th Anniversary Weekend
In just two short weeks we will be “shamrocking” the Beach! While the full marathon tickets are sold out, registration is still open for the half-marathon, the 8k run, and several other events. Click here to register and I’ll see you there!
Champions were crowned and dreams turned into reality
This past weekend the Virginia Beach Sports Center (VBSC) hosted both the 2022 MEAC Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships and the 2022 VHSL State Indoor Track & Field Championships.
The 2022 MEAC Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships drew 500 athletes from all eight MEAC Conference Universities to showcase their talents in Virginia Beach. Over three days, the athletes competed for a chance to take home top conference honors in their respective events. Our Norfolk State University neighbors saw many athletes take home first-place finishes. Their men’s indoor track and field team finished the week at the top, taking home first place overall as a team. The 2022 VHSL State Indoor Track and Field Championships (Division 5 & 6) kept the championship energy in the building later in the week. The event featured 1,800 athletes from all over Virginia who competed to be crowned as state champions. Congratulations one and all!

This weekend, the VBSC will be hosting the 2022 Champion Speed Regional Championship and the 2022 AAU Volleyball Festival. Both events are expected to bring a total of 2,600 athletes to Virginia Beach to showcase their talents - another exciting weekend in Virginia Beach Sports!
