April 1, 2022

Dear Valued Tourism Industry Partners,

I am very excited to share with you that the National Travel & Tourism Week award selection committee received almost 160 nominations for this year’s awards - that is an incredible number! Thanks to all of you who stepped up and nominated the hospitality heroes who make a difference in your place of business. The committee convened earlier this week and made their selections. The winners' names will remain sealed until the luncheon on May 5. Registration for the luncheon will open soon; stay tuned!

Virginia Beach Leads Comp Set for 10 Consecutive Weeks
If the first quarter of 2022 is any indication of what's to come, Virginia Beach should be hopping this spring and summer! According to Smith Travel Research, Virginia Beach dominated our competitive set in weekly occupancy rates for the majority of the first quarter of 2022. The chart below outlines each week from 12/26 through and including 3/19/22.

Lots of Citywide Activities Happening This Weekend
We’re looking forward to another exciting sports-filled weekend in Virginia Beach as almost 10,000 athletes are expected to be in town!

The 2022 Krypton’s “Compete for a Cure” brings CrossFit athletes down to the Sports Center for a great cause. Athletes will raise funds in support of kids fighting cancer and other life-threatening diseases through supporting the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Also at the Sports Center, the 2022 Blevins Memorial Big Money Tournament will bring 5,000 volleyball athletes down to Virginia Beach to showcase their skills.

Across the street at the Convention Center, cheer and dance will be on full display as the 2022 “The One” Cheer and Dance Final will bring 2,000 athletes to the City. At Ocean Lakes High School, 500 gymnasts will be participating in the 2022 Level 6-7 State Meet. At Princess Anne Athletic Complex, the 2022 “Wild Card Weekend” will bring 500 baseball athletes to town. Meanwhile, at the US Field Hockey Training Center, field hockey athletes will be participating in the 2022 Saint Play Days. Yes, Virginia Beach truly is a destination for sports!

Loonie Savers Returns in 2022
After two long years of closed borders, we are finally able to welcome back our Canadian guests to the USA and to Virginia Beach!  We are so pleased to be able to once again include a very well-known savings program, Loonie Savers, to an extremely important market.  The Tourism Team is in the process of soliciting special offers from our hotels, attractions, restaurants, and tourism-related businesses. We need as many participants as possible! For any questions, please contact Dani at dbrandaolacerda@visitvirginiabeach.com. Here is the link for businesses to participate:  Virginia Beach Loonie Savers Pass - Google Forms
